Things you never should say to fourteen year olds

Today we were talking about special people in our lives and we drew pictures of our most important people on the board. The kids wanted me to draw a picture of my most important person, so naturally I drew Jim. That was a mistake. Here is the conversation that followed. One student, who I will identify as C., thrives on inappropriate conversations.

J: Is that your boyfriend?
Claire: No, that's my husband.
C: HOw long have you been married?
Claire: Oh...3 1/2 years
C: Do you sleep with him?
CLaire: Ummm...stammer stammer
C: Do you have SEX with him?
Claire: C!! That is totally inappropriate!
C: What miss...it's natural...he's your husband.
Claire: Beet red and horrified "I sleep on the couch. He snores big time." (Sorry Jim)

SO...I won't be talking about JIM anymore at school. Lesson learned. From now on I'm going to say my most important person is my Mom like everyone else does.

Major blog slacking....

Sorry about that. I have been LAZY.

Fortunately, I have pictures from last weekend's Marlow Circular walk, which Jim and I went on and fond memories of the delicious Korean food that Jim/Kim cooked for us on Sunday(but forgot to take pictures).

We started our trek to Marlow at Paddington Station, where we were met by these guys:

We weren't sure what they were. We thought possibly scuba divers, but most scuba divers aren't kitted out (as they say here) in their wet suits with large quantities of beer in the middle of a train station. So, upon further investigation we discovered that they were New Zealand Rugby fans, kitted out for the big match against France (which they lost, much to AUrelie's glee). The funniest part about their get ups (besides that they were wearing them in the first place) was that they had a zipper sewn into the fly. Can you imagine having to take that whole thing off every time you had to use the bathroom?

Marlow is a beautiful little town near Oxford that sits on the Thames. We started the walk in a park with a huge tree.

There were also many hungry swans (maybe not hungry, actually. PIggish swans.)

A lot of the walk was along the Thames

Jim waves from a tall footbridge:

Fall is upon us here. Today it was in the 50's.

Boats on the river:

Jim at the pub:

Inside the pub, the decorations were amusing. There were many stuffed fish and many mounted heads of various animals (Otter, mink, foxes, badgers, and a menacing looking dear); they were all snarling viciously:

Jim poses outside the pub, "The FLowerpot Hotel" (as evidenced by the giant flower pot dangling above the front door).

The pub also had chickens, guinea fowl, and PIGS!!!

The pigs were very friendly and cute. Unfortunately there was a bratty three year old boy who thought it was funny to kick the pigs in the snout whenever they came up and stuck their noses through the fence. His parents gently reprimanded him, but he continued, squealing with laughter every time the pig squealed in pain. Future sociopath. We were glad when he and his parents moved on. The pigs liked the attention and one loved the scratch he was getting from Jim. He was just like Buster--scratching his back on the nearest object.

After lunch I had an unfortunate run in with nettles. Word of advice: when you are in the country and need to run into the bushes, look before you sit.

English Countryside:

And some woods:

Marlow is a cool and, we found on a Saturday evening, HOPPING town. We'll be back!

PS a more interesting blog will come SOON. Our trip to Greece is imminent!

Korean Dinner!

Next week Jim is cooking Korean! He has promised to make it as authentic as possible, including dressing up like the North Korean Leader Kim Jung il. We found this lovely picture of Kim Jung il on the internet:

I think Jim can pull it off:

(PS I am learning all kinds of great tricks by going to computer class with my students. Photoshop rocks!)

An evening with Meg and Dan

On Friday night we had dinner at Meg and Dan's house (this is their weekend to SHINE on our blog--as usual! They are great friends and lots of fun!)

The food was delicious because Meg is a really good cook and finally we took a picture of her in her awesome, award-winning party hat:

Additionally, Jim and Dan played Dan's new guitar video game (amidst much eye rolling from the females in the room). Here are Jim and Dan pretending to rock out whilst playin the video game:

And this is what they looked like when they were really playing it. VERY hard core. What a bunch of hard rockers!

Some of Jim's moments

Recently, Jim convinced me to go with him to a BBQ place near Oxford Street called BoDean's. As we approached, we noticed that there was a guy in a UT tee-shirt standing outside of the door. When we entered we discovered a ROOM FULL of Texas fans, watching a football game from the day before via computer. Being an Aggie, Jim felt a little anxious (even though he's a two-percenter, he still has some Aggie pride). Fortunately, I hid his Aggie ring from him a long time ago, so his status was not obvious. It was kind of weird being a. in a BBQ place and b. in a room full of Texans in the middle of London.

A moment of glory came for Jim on Saturday when we finally caved in and bought a TV! Here is Jim, gleefully holding his new TV.

Unfortunately, it was broken, so he had to take it back and get another one. But now he is settled comfortably on the couch, watching Flags of our Fathers at high volume (he immediately rigged the TV up to the stereo speakers for maximum effect and the first thing he watched on the TV was a Cure video). Some things never change.

Long time no blog....

The good news is that we got our fabulous camera back!! The bad news is that it's SUnday and tomorrow we have to go back to work again. The weekends just aren't long enough.

Today we were supposed to do a country walk, but everyone was feeling a bit on the sick side (except me), so we decided to join Meg and Dan and visit some galleries and museums around town. Jim took some pictures.

Boys vs. Girls

Dodging the paparazzi

Looking for the Royal Academy of Arts. We saw the Georg Baselitz exhibit...interesting. We also saw a great photography exhibit at the Photographers' Gallery, which was politically charged and controversial.

Somehow I missed this....a "stripper" in Soho.

Hustle and Bustle in Central London. Even on a Sunday.

Walking in Notting Hill

After our big party, we needed to stretch our legs, so this afternoon Jim and I walked from our house to and around the Notting Hill area, and then back. It was a beautiful day!

Jim and Finchley had a snuggle before we left:

At one point a very large, pink afro walked by:

Jim walked up to Holland Park:

A Very Merry Unbirthday to Jim, Vlad, Dave and Julie

Last night we had our biggest and most diverse party to celebrate four birthdays in September! Unfortunately, Dave and Carolina couldn't make it because of a sick baby, but our next door neighbor Julie came and, as it turns out, her birthday is on Thursday. So we added her to the celebration!

The theme was "unbirthday" so everyone wore hats. Meg won first prize for best hat, with Joe coming in as a close second with his improvised pinata hat and Ethna winning third for her fun straw hat.

Jim sported a fabulous Birthday Cake hat and posed with his festive table before the party. He also had some quality time with Finchley, who was banished to the spare room once things got crowded.

Simon, Ada and Aurelie were some of the first to arrive!

Most of the English people had never experienced the fun of a pinata before, so it was a great hit! Maddy tried it first:

Then Joe, Phil, Dan, and I all gave it a shot before Jim delivered the fatal hit:

We pointed Jim in the wrong direction for fun, but he peeked, so managed to eventually find his way over to the pinata.

Ethna poses with the loot:

Joe and Jim with Joe's award winning pinata hat:

Ethna and Andrew, our downstairs neighbors. THey loaned us wine glasses and Andrew set up the pinata. They rock!

Vlad models Meg's first prize hat (with Finchley) and then Jim's birthday hat. Unfortunately, we didn't get a picture of MEG in her hat...but will update the blog if one surfaces. Because SHE really looked the best in her hat:

Tony chills out in the corner while Homer finishes off the champagne:

A good time was had by all!
